Audition Process: A Social Story

GMYS has serviced thousands of children since 1958 when it was established by Mr. Robert Strassburg in order to provide an independent, complementary program to music education in the schools. Today, the Greater Miami Youth Symphony is an inclusive year-round, multi-tiered music training program consisting of over 500 students ranging in age from 5 to 18. We offer scholarships on a first-come first-served basis. Instruments are available. All levels and abilities are welcome!

GMYS has serviced thousands of children since 1958 when it was established byStudents can join our program with little to no experience. Parents will register their student for the appropriate program level (see below). Rehearsals take place mostly on the weekends but some are during the week, so make sure you make a note of your class time. Rehearsals are typically once a week for 1-3 hours, depending on the level. After a year or two, the student may be ready for the next level and will audition for the next ensemble, following the direction of their current ensemble conductor. As students progress through the program, they will aim to make it to the highest ensemble level for their instrument, which for many is the Symphony Orchestra.

Students who have little to no experience do not have to audition and would enroll in our beginning program called MYami. For our higher level ensembles, students would need to audition. These usually take place at the start of our Season which is typically the end of August – beginning of September. Audition requirements are updated yearly over the summer, so make sure you stay up to date in case of changes. Students can select their audition time using the link on our auditions page closer to the date.

How do I know which level is right for my child?
